Physical Activity
Roland Michener, as Governor General, placed a real emphasis on fitness and had a significant role in the development of Participaction. At Roland Michener, we value and place an emphasis on physical activity which helps children understand the importance of keeping active and adopting a healthy lifestyle. These include encouragement of physical activities outside and inside, school wide Fitness Fridays, intramural sports, and competitive sports teams.
Fitness Fridays are held weekly, and children participate as members of their Colour Team, or simply with the children in the rest of the school. These include things like running, small team work, ball games, organized events, Japanese Radio exercises, aerobics, and dance - anything to have fun while getting our heart rates up.
Children are encouraged to try out for intramural and sports teams and we have very wide participation of students. We encourage the development of new skills as well as other important attributes for mental health: positive attitudes, encouraging behaviour, fair play, and inclusiveness.
Competitive sports teams are also selected, however most students who try out do get on the team and learn that competition is about playing as a team, working as a team, and encouraging one another. Personal bests and sportsmanship are our primary goals.
