Achievement and School Improvement Planning

Measures of Student Achievement and Success

The school follows the guidelines set out in the OCDSB Policy and Procedures for Student Evaluation, available on the Board’s web site as well as the Educator’s Resource Guide on Assessment, Evaluation and Reporting of Student Achievement and the Ministry’s Growing Success document.

RMPS student portfolios provide a collection of a child’s work and progress over time. The practices in assessment reflect the implementation of the Ontario Curriculum and we use the Progress Report and the Ontario Provincial report card to report a child’s progress. Ongoing measures such as anecdotal notes, observation checklists, self and peer assessments, summative tasks, teacher made and large scale testing, PM Benchmarks, CASI and oral presentations are also used. Various sharing assemblies throughout the year help promote student strengths and talents, celebrate their successes and recognize students for participation in school events and for special contributions to our school. Students are involved in various presentations of their learning, including public speaking, dramatic productions and musical performances. The students also participate in the provincial EQAO testing in Grades 3 and 6.

School Improvement Plans and Initiatives

Our SIPSA focus this year is to develop our students’ problem-solving and computational skills. Educators work together at staff meetings and PD days to look at student data and student work. We plan lessons together and strengthen our teaching skills through collaborative efforts. Teachers moderate student work together - this helps us to identify trends in student thinking and student needs. SIPSA plans and progress are shared with parents throughout the year at School Council, through the newsletters and on the website. We also welcome and value parent input at any time.

Student Achievement - Literacy & Numeracy

  • We use a variety of strategies to encourage more active commitment to literacy and numeracy in the school and the home environment. Parent tips are often included in the school newsletter.

  • Continue the implementation and P.D. of balanced literacy and numeracy.

  • Focus on the development of co-created criteria and clear expectations to support student achievement.

  • Provide regular opportunities for explicit, supportive feedback, as well as self- and peer-assessment.

  • Make reading, writing and numeracy assignments relevant with practical activities

  • Continue the use of graphic organizers.

  • Encourage reading and writing outside of school.

  • Provide guided and modeled writing lessons.

  • Edit writing together using models.

  • Utilize teacher developed common literacy/numeracy assessments.

  • Establish daily problem solving.

Continuous Improvement – School Culture

Staff and students at Roland Michener will focus on various ways to demonstrate and treat others with Respect, to be Open to new ideas and differences, to cultivate a positive Attitude, and to take Responsibility (R.O.A.R.). Assemblies and daily practice focus on Restorative Practices, STAR strategies, global awareness and recognition of accomplishments. Students can participate in the assemblies by presenting classroom activities, songs and skits.

Students at RMPS care for our earth by recycling milk cartons, milk bags, paper, ink cartridges, batteries. We have Litter-less Lunches and regularly participate in school yard “Clean ups”.

School Learning Plan

The school follows the guidelines set out in the OCDSB “Policy and Procedures for Student Evaluation”, available on the Board’s web site as well as the “Educator’s Resource Guide on Assessment, Evaluation and Reporting of Student Achievement” and the Ministry’s “Growing Success” document.

We promote children’s learning by creating exemplars which model quality work with students, and co-creating the success criteria with them so they understand what steps they need to take to be successful.

Monthly assemblies throughout the year help promote student strengths and talents, celebrate their successes and recognize students for participation in school events and for special contributions to our school. Students are involved in various presentations of their learning, including public speaking, dramatic productions and musical performances. The students also participate in the provincial EQAO testing in Grades 3 and 6.

Teachers moderate student work together - this helps us to identify trends in student thinking and student needs.
